Extract from the speech of the Archbishop of Tirana, - Dirrachios, and of Albania - Anastasios, in the IV Symposium regarding religion, Science and the Environment, entitled 'Adriatic Sea, A Sea at risk, A Unity of Purpose'.

The horizon of Orthodoxy does not only include issues regarding humans. Its interest is imminent about the whole creation. As the equilibrium disturbance of the natural environment is getting more immerse by the thoughtless intervention of humans, Orthodoxy is called upon to bring out the sensitiveness of humans, who exploit nature out of their greed. Orthodoxy is called to conduce the limitation of vast consumption, by the virtues of self-sufficiency and abstinence, which constitute the integral element of 'the fruit of the Spirit' (Gal. 5,22) It is called upon to promote the essential respect towards the environment, by continuously stressing that the environment is the creation of God and by revealing its sanctity and functionality, that all creations of God process.
As part of the mankind or of smaller units of the society, we have over-exploited nature out of selfishness or lack of information. Everyone of us has shown indifference or contempt towards nature, by polluting it in different ways. The sooner we shall realize the unforgivable abuse that we commit, the quickest we shall find our natural environment in harmony.
Our faith remains vivacious, that the cultivation of a religious conscience, with evident interest in the natural environment, constitutes the basic element of glorification and gratitude towards the Creator of the Universe.
