Aoos river flows into Adriatic sea, after spreading 98 km in the
Greek region and 181 km in the Albanian region. Aoos is one of the
biggest rivers in Albania and one of the big rivers in Europe that
was not significantly modified by humans.
Walking across a rough landscape with mountains up to 2485 meters
high (Drites) and valleys, the Lagoon of Narta flows into the north,
in the wider region of Avlona. Through this course, dynamical forms
are being established as in a living organism.
The ìåáíäñéóìïß
that are being formed together with the holms, create a landscape
of unique beauty, due to their great size combined with the harsh
riversides (when the width of river becomes norrower).
In terms of the program, actions relative with the lagoon of Narta
are materialized, aiming to the safeguarding of natural conditions
of operation of the riverine system, which is a natural heritage
in national and international level.
Implementation
The results of this study showed that along the whole length of
the river Aoos the quality of habitats is excellent, resulting to:
A better ability of self-cleaning by the river,
A very good condition of the biota (flora and fauna) of the
region
The fauna of the lakebed invertebrate is typical of the
northern ridges in all the river's regions with the exception
of two that have been burdened by human activity.
The fish fauna is comprised of 18 species of fish 5 of
which are common to the Greek and Albanian section of the
river. Certain species are protected by E.U. legislation.
he avifauna is comprised of 200 bird species, many of which
are protected by E.U. legislation, while others are globally
considered endangered species like the Dalmatian Pelican,
the red kite and lesser kestrel
The Aoos River can be a prototype of naturalness for the Balkan
rivers and to act as a guide in environmental restitution projects
in heavily modified rivers.
